Financial Accounting Standards Board establishes and improves standards of financial accounting and reporting for the guidance and education of the public, including issuers, auditors, and other users. GASB establishes and improves standards of state and local governmental accounting and financial reporting that will result in useful information for users of financial reports and guide and educate the public.

NASBA serves as a forum for the nation's state boards of accountancy which administers the Uniform CPA Examination, license certified public accountants, and regulates the practice of public accountancy in the United States. The Information Systems Audit and Control Association, Inc. (ISACA) has long recognized that the specialized nature of information systems (IS) auditing, and the skills necessary to perform such audits, require standards that apply specifically to IS auditing.
